Dr Stephen Williams

MBBS, MD (Syd), FRACP

Dr Stephen Williams is a Senior Visiting Medical Officer (VMO) in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Westmead Hospital. Dr Williams is also an honorary therapeutic endoscopy consultant at Westmead’s Children’s Hospital and a VMO at Southern Highlands Private Hospital and Rosemont Endoscopy Centre, Wollongong.

Dr Williams was previously Head of Department and Director of Endoscopy at Westmead Hospital as well as a board member of the Gastroenterological society of Australia (GESA) and Chairman of the Australian Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Association (AGEA).

Dr Williams covers all aspects of Gastroenterology and Therapeutic endoscopy with a particular interest in the endoscopic management of large colonic polyps as well as biliary and pancreatic disease, with the role of endoscopy in the diagnosis and therapy of these conditions.

With a long-term commitment to the training of Gastroenterology at both the undergraduate and postgraduate level, Dr Williams trains registrars and fellows in the art and science of endoscopy. Also committed to training fellow gastroenterologists at the tertiary level having convened and participated in multiple endoscopy workshops, both nationally and internationally.

Research interests have resulted in a Doctorate in Medicine (MD) at Sydney University and over 200 publications in peer-reviewed journals as well as multiple presentations at national and international conferences.

Prof. Michael Bourke

MBBS, FRACP

Michael Bourke is Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of Sydney and Director of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy at Westmead Hospital. He is a widely respected expert in gastrointestinal endoscopy and endoscopic tissue resection. His work has helped shape clinical practice globally, particularly in the endoscopic management of neoplasia in the colon, oesophagus, duodenum, and papilla.

He has held many national leadership roles in Gastroenterology and Endoscopy in Australia and has established an internationally renowned quaternary referral centre at Westmead for the endoscopic treatment of early digestive cancer. Professor Bourke was Co-editor of Endoscopy, the journal of the European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (2011–2019) and convenes the Sydney International Endoscopy Symposium (SIES 08-26) with over 700 attendees.

He is senior author of more than 900 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters in leading journals including Gastroenterology, Gut, AJG, GIE, and Endoscopy (Google Scholar: 19000 citations, h-index 73, i10-index 233). His contributions have been recognised with awards including the GESA Outstanding Clinician Award (2012), BSG Christopher Williams Medal (2017), GESA Distinguished Research Award (2019), and ASGE Crystal Award (2022)

Dr Eric Lee

MBBS (HONS), FRACP

Dr Eric Lee is a Staff Specialist Gastroenterologist and Interventional Endoscopist at Westmead Hospital, Sydney with expertise in ERCP, EUS, advanced polypectomy techniques, and endoscopic therapies for Barrett’s neoplasia. He is certified in Australia by the Conjoint Committee for the Recognition of Training in Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (CCRTGE) for colonoscopy, gastroscopy, ERCP and EUS, and has been supervising and teaching trainees in these procedures over many years. Dr Lee has completed colonoscopy recertification as part of the GESA Colonoscopy Recertification Program. His commitment to the field of endoscopic oncology underpins his passion for research and teaching in gastrointestinal endoscopy. This has led to invitations as faculty at scientific meetings and publications in high impact peer-reviewed journals. 

A medical graduate of the University of New South Wales, he trained in Gastroenterology at Westmead and Royal North Shore Hospitals in Sydney before completing the prestigious Clinical Fellowship in Advanced Therapeutic Endoscopy with the University of Toronto, Canada.

He served on the Executive Committee of GESA’s Australian Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Association (AGEA)/Faculty of Endoscopy from 2013-2019 and on the Education Committee of the World Endoscopy Organization (WEO) from 2013-2017. He was AGEA’s representative on the Scientific Program Committee that organised Australian Gastroenterology Week (AGW) 2019, the annual national scientific meeting of GESA.  At Westmead Hospital, he continues to be actively involved in the organisation of the annual Sydney International Endoscopy Symposium.

Dr Mayenaaz (Naaz) Sidhu

Dr Mayenaaz (Naaz) Sidhu strives in providing high quality diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy delivering the best possible outcomes for his patients. He is a firm believer in evidence based practice in managing patients.  Dr Sidhu has an interest in all aspects of gastroenterology and therapeutic endoscopy with an expertise in the endoscopic management of small bowel disorders, colonic polyps as well as biliary and pancreatic diseases. He is passionate about optimising patient outcomes using advanced minimally invasive techniques to avoid the need for major surgery.

Dr Sidhu was awarded his fellowship with the Royal Australia College of Physicians (FRACP) in 2017 as a Gastroenterologist. He underwent additional training in interventional endoscopy by completing two years of an advanced endoscopy fellowship, under the guidance of the world-renowed Prof Michael Bourke, focusing on Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), Endoscopic Mucosal Resection (EMR) and Endoscopic Submucosa Dissection (ESD) and concurrently undertook a doctorate in medicine (PhD). He was subsequently awarded his PhD in Medicine in 2022 from the University of Sydney and received a university prize for his work.

Dr Sidhu’s research has published in numerous peer-reviewed journals. Dr Sidhu is currently actively involved in many international and national research projects. Given his expertise he is regularly invited to actively participate in international and national meetings.

Dr Sidhu is extremely dedicated towards his patients and is always striving to provide high-quality evidenced based care.

Dr Anthony Whitfield

Dr Anthony Whitfield is a specialist Gastroenterologist and Interventional Endoscopist committed to delivering expert, patient-centred care with a focus on clinical excellence, safety, and exceptional outcomes.
 
He provides comprehensive assessment and management across the full spectrum of gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary, and pancreatic disorders and has particular expertise in advanced diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy. His practice includes advanced endoscopic resection of complex colorectal polyps and minimally invasive treatment approaches designed to optimise outcomes while reducing the need for more invasive interventions where appropriate.
 
Dr Whitfield has a strong interest in hepatobiliary and pancreaticobiliary disease and offers advanced endoscopic procedures including endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) and endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) for the investigation and management of biliary, pancreatic, and upper gastrointestinal disorders. He combines technical expertise with evidence-based, individualised care tailored to each patient.
 
In addition, Dr Whitfield has expertise in the assessment and management of small bowel disorders, offering advanced diagnostic and therapeutic options including capsule endoscopy (PillCam™) and single balloon enteroscopy to investigate conditions that may not be accessible with conventional endoscopy.
